Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Namibian giraffe, this is one of nine (?) recognized subspecies of the tallest mammal. Seen under the scorching heat and blinding light at mid-day in Kunene region of Namibia - second picture shows the light as it appeared to my eye... all colours washed out. This was the second most often seen mammal we observed in this region - after the springbok.

Habitat:

Seen in Kunene region of Namibia (northwest), in arid acacia tree-and-shrub landscape. The region is still very dry (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, following a three-year dry-spell. We observed groups of giraffes everywhere, except close to habitations.
