Field Notes

Description:

Often mistaken with hummingbirds, because of the long beak and the shiny feathers, Arirambas are in a completely different family. They catch their prey (in this case a bottle fly) in plain air, and then whack it in a stone or branch until breaking its exoskeleton, to make it easier to digest.

Ava, thanks for reminding me, I already added it to that mission; Marta, it is bigger than most hummingbirds, its average size is 22 cm, beak included.
Are they as small as the hummingbirds? The picture is deceiving because it makes you think of it as a kingfishers'-like size but out of the comment I imagine then they should be tiny?
Sergio, this spotting could go in the Hunters and Animal Feeding Behavior mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8463465
