Field Notes

Description:

A red ladybird, orange head and pronotum with 12 black spots, orange legs.

Habitat:

Spotted during a day walk at Kebun Raya Cibodas, a 80ha area above 1.400 metres high, mix of botanical park with big trees & palms and surrounded by rainforest at the foot of Gene volcano, Java - Indonesia.

Notes:

The Epilachninae are leaf-feeding herbivores rather than being predators. Accordingly, several members of the subfamily are crop pests, and sometimes cause locally serious crop losses.
