Field Notes

Description:

This is a Red-legged x Southern Appalachian Salamander hybrid. These two species readily hybridize and in this location, there is thought to be little or none full blooded individuals of either species. The hybrids have varying amounts of red on the legs (the full red-legged has solid red legs). These are the two individuals we caught that had the most red on them.

Habitat:

Found in high elevation mountains. We flipped logs and rocks off a trail in a lightly wooded forest and turned up about a dozen of these guys.
