Field Notes

Description:

This is an adult female Grizzly which had 3 large cubs following closely behind. Female grizzlies weigh 130–200 kg (290–440 lb) and this one has been fattening up on the local chokecherries. Grizzly bears hibernate for 5–7 months each year. During this time they give birth to their offspring and do not defecate or urinate.

Habitat:

In North America, the species is now found only in Alaska, south through much of western Canada, and into portions of the northwestern United States including Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming, extending as far south as Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, but is most commonly found in Canada.

Notes:

The mountains in the background are the Canadian Rockies. It was quite a sight to her and her 4 cubs walking around the cabins.

wow !!!!! nice teddy bear!!!! Congratulations ianmaton,,,,, great spotting....
Thanks to all for the kind comments! It's great to get a spotting of the day. The first snow had just fallen on the mountains which helped to set the seen. I'm just glad that she stood up before heading down into valley. The three cubs, that were following close behind, were quite large so I would guess they were in their second year.
Congratulations! Wonderful spot.

I hope you were not too close....
Thanks. Yes, they certainly are impressive animals when they stand up! They can use those long claws to dig up roots, bulbs and the occasional burrowing animal, although, in this case the mother and three cubs were enjoying the local chokecherry crop.
It would still look nice without the backdrop. Beautiful!!
Thanks. Yes, it does have a slightly unreal quality with the mountains as a backdrop.
