Field Notes
Description:
The Sea Turtle is a large sea creature, usually weighing about 160kg or 352lbs. Sea Turtles colour can vary anywhere from brown, to green, or to yellow-ish. These turtles can share, and be in the same environment as coral reefs.
Sea Turtles and a fish known as Yellow Tang interact with each other regularly. Yellow Tang group together in large clumps and wait for the turtle to arrive for a cleaning. The fish eat algae and parasites off of the turtle. The turtle's health is then improved and can swim faster. This is an example of mutualism because they both benefit.
Sea Turtles are designed in a fascinating way to be able to survive in the ocean. These turtles have shells that make their movements in the water much faster. They also have fins shaped like paddles to help swim faster. Of course, they do need to come up for oxygen, but they can stay submerged for up to 5 hours! They do this by slowing their heart rate.
These turtles are sexual reproducers. When turtles come ashore, they can find themselves a mate. Then lay eggs on / in the beach.
Habitat:
Sea Turtles live almost in every ocean in the world, but most likely in tropical, and subtropical places/beaches where it is warm.
They can either be herbivores or carnivores. But most sea turtles eat seaweed, and/or algae.
A large Sea Turtle has very few predators, mostly consisting of sharks. Tiger sharks, in particular, are known to eat sea turtles.
Sea Turtles lives aren't exactly exciting, usually feeding, then resting about or swimming. Interactions that the turtle has with the environment are quite small.
