Welcome to Project Noah, Helen! This is a beautiful find! The European Mantis is a fairly common introduced species. They come in green and brown (various shades of brown). One easy way to ID them is to look at the inside of the front legs. They have a spot that is usually white with a black ring around the edge or sometimes just solid black (your second photo shows it). I hope you enjoy it here! If you haven't done so already, it's a good idea to read through the FAQ page for general info on submissions for spottings and other features of the site. Please peruse the Missions and Blog pages as well! http://www.projectnoah.org/faq Any questions, just ask!
