Field Notes

Description:

Striking black and yellow butterfly with blue and red spots on the hindwing. The markings are much different than that of the Tiger swallowtails and is smaller.

Habitat:

Spotted nectaring on a currant bush near the Umtanum creek in eastern Washington. The area is mostly open sagebrush steppe with pine trees and thick understory in the creeks and valleys. Above 2000 ft.

Notes:

Found in western North America.
