Field Notes

Description:

Larva stage salamander. ~3 inches long with small blue spots on a greenish back.

Habitat:

In a small pool connected to Tails Creek just north of where Tails Creek meets Carter's Lake. Stream next to the pool was ~10 meters across, ~ 1 foot deep, running over bed rock, boulders, and sand.

Interesting, I would have thought they would lose them once their legs developed. Nice spotting!

Thank you for the comment Machi! The head frill does make this individual look like an axolotl, but actually the larva stage of all salamanders have these "frills" which are actually their external gills.

I don't know if it is one, but the head frills remind me of an axolotl
