Congratulations Arun, your Indian Eagle-owl is our Spotting of the Day: "That's some spectacular tufts on this Indian Eagle-owl (Bubo bengalensis), our Spotting of the Day! Although sometimes referred to as ear tufts, these tufts have actually nothing to do with hearing. So why do some owls species have tufts? Their purpose remains unknown but several hypothesis have been formulated which may provide some explanation for their function. Theories proposed include camouflage (tufts would help break up the owl’s outline and make it look like a broken branch), helping in recognizing a member of their own species, and mimicking mammals in oder to frighten mammalian predators".
