Field Notes

Description:

The Eastern Bluebird building its nest. Male (image one) is bright blue above with a reddish-brown breast and white belly; Female (image two) is duller. The Tree Swallows just left this nest before I could clean it out for the new family of Bluebirds.

Habitat:

Open farmlands with scattered trees. They like the apple orchard.

Notes:

My mother rehabilitated a pair of Bluebirds 15 years ago and set them free in our orchard and we have had them ever since.
