Field Notes

Description:

This toad was spotted at night near the water pump at our camp site. Characteristically, this species has a light-colored middorsal stripe, coupled with a brown or gray dorsal surface, though some individuals may have a green or reddish dorsal surface. In general, A. fowleri characteristically displays at least three of the following characteristics: tibia with no greatly enlarged warts, no spots on the chest or belly, the largest dark spots containing at least three warts, and a parotoid gland that borders the cranial ridge.

Habitat:

Fowlers Toads are found throughout much of the eastern US, but are absent from most of the Coastal Plain of South Carolina and Georgia and most of Florida. In our region they are generally restricted to the Piedmont and lower areas of the Mountains. These toads are often common in forested habitats, particularly near temporary or permanent waters.
