Field Notes

Description:

Looks like a lady-bug, and a 2nd grade class was trying to determine more information about the species.

Habitat:

A 2nd grade classroom found many of these crawling around our school garden area, by the eggplants.

Notes:

The first picture gives perspective as it is crawls by a leaf and some hay. The second picture is the underside of the insect. The third picture is a close up as it moves around the dirt area. Please help us determine whether these new visitors to our garden are healthy or harmful for our plants.

Nice find! This Lady Beetle species feeds on aphids, mites, insect eggs and larvae which makes them a beneficial insect for your garden. They also feed on pollen but they will not harm your plants :) Here is more information: http://bugguide.net/node/view/8376
