Field Notes

Description:

Bright blue above with much white and black in the wing and tail; white below; black facial markings; prominent crest.

Habitat:

Chiefly oak forest.

Notes:

Raucous jay-jay, harsh cries, and a rich variety of other calls. They have a violent dislike of predators, and their raucous screaming makes it easy to locate a hawk or roosting owl. They are migratory and travel in large flocks both in the spring and the fall.
