Growing along a path in coastal mixed lowland equatorial rainforest (freshwater swamp forest/sago swamp).

Thanks Jonathan for the ID suggestion. Did you also have a good informational link on the species? Perhaps I didn't look long enough but I could not find the species mentioned for New Guinea. But there are records for the genus.( http://www.pngplants.org/cgi-bin/RBG ) I don't know if it is invasive or another member of the genus.
