Loblolly Pine Cone (Female)
Pinus taeda
34.02, -84.58
Field Notes
Description:
I had never noticed this growth or stage or growth on a pine tree before and thought I would share the image. It was so intersting to me that you can see all the structures emerging, even though it was smaller than a dime.
Habitat:
Spotted on this tree: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/42424008
Notes:
Fun fact: Female (or ovulate) cones are called "megastrobili" - so as you decorate your homes for the holidays you can pull that word out on family and friends! :)
