Bashful Wakerobin
Trillium catesbaei
34.11, -84.72
Field Notes
Description:
This is a follow up to a spotting I made in 2013 (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/22952018). I had hoped to get a closer look at the plant while it was in fresher form - it was hard to tell in 2013 if the color was pink or if the bloom had faded to that color but it does indeed appear to be pink! A boggy area between the trail and the flower was much larger and sloppier than it had been in previous years so I couldn't get any closer to the trilliums I came looking for.
Habitat:
Found in the southeastern United States. Like most trilliums, it prefers moist, humus-rich soil in shade. Its northern limit includes the Great Smoky Mountains and other parts of North Carolina and Tennessee.
Notes:
Spotted along the trail at the Allatoona Pass Battlefield.
