Field Notes

Description:

Wingspan 28-30mm. Wings on dorsal side are dark grayish brown, hind wing with prominent orange spot at outer margin. Hind wing ventral side whitish gray with marginal black-eyed orange spot, a small patch of blue before tail, and 2 broken cross bands of black and white spots.

Habitat:

Meadows, neglected roadsides, and crop fields.

Caterpillar feeds on fruits and seeds of knotweed, St.Johnswort, hawthorn, cultivated beans, and hops.

Adult emerges May - Sept.
