Field Notes

Description:

Known as "white mahogany", this is a "stringybark" species of eucalypt in the family Myrtaceae, and could possibly be either Eucalyptus psammitica or Eucalyptus acmenoides (sometimes called "yellow stringybark"). All Australian natives, there's upwards of a dozen species of this unusual type of eucalypt but I've yet to nominate an exact species (see second reference link). I'm just unable to find an exact visual match for the gumnuts online. The gumnuts in this spotting are quite distinctive with an unusual texture and globular shape, appear to have a slightly raised disc, but there are no signs of any valves inside the gumnuts I found, enclosed or otherwise. Both species are a close fit, but another look at this spotting is definitely warranted. A third possibility is Eucalyptus carnea (broad-leaved white mahogany). All three species are endemic to this area. PS: The second reference (to the right where it says "403 Forbidden") does work and will still link to the EUCLID page - More about White Mahoganies. I have no idea why this error code is being displayed because this is a freely-accessable open site.

Habitat:

Toohey Forest is a remnant eucalyptus woodland reserve of approximately 655 hectares. The forest is situated within an urban area on the south side of Brisbane, within the city limits. https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/clean-and-green/natural-environment-and… This tree was in a sunny location on sandy soils.

Notes:

A very helpful resource guide to identify local eucalypt species in the greater Brisbane region - http://www.saveourwaterwaysnow.com.au/_dbase_upl/Euc_ID.pdf ....and this is my shortlist for this spotting: Eucalyptus acmenoides - http://keyserver.lucidcentral.org:8080/euclid/data/02050e02-0108-490e-8… Eucalyptus psammitica - http://keyserver.lucidcentral.org:8080/euclid/data/02050e02-0108-490e-8… Eucalyptus carnea - http://keyserver.lucidcentral.org:8080/euclid/data/02050e02-0108-490e-8…
