Description:

Small pupa, ~1 in. long, hanging from a thistle. Found on near a creek, in mixed hardwood (mostly Basswood, Oak, Maple)

Doing a little research based on your suggestion LuckyLogan, I think you are right that it is a Pained Lady. Thistle is not one of the host plants for red admiral but it is for Painted Lady. http://www.dallasbutterflies.com/Butterfly%20Gardening/Host%20Plants%20by%20Butterfly%20Species.htm And also it looks more like painted lady, thanks for your help.

Looks like genus Vanessa. So Red Admiral or Painted Lady. I'm pretty sure thistle is a host of Red Admiral (V. atalanta) so it's also likely the same for V. cardui. Chrysalis seems more similar to Vanessa cardui (Painted Lady).
