Field Notes

Description:

A large fungus with no gills and a velvety texture. It had about ten to fifteen lobes concentrating around a small stalk. It had white undersides with a medium-brown top.

Habitat:

On an open trail with a deciduous forest on both sides.

Notes:

I think that it may have been living off of a dead beech tree about 8 feet away but I'm not sure.

It's a young specimen, but if you come back in a few days and if it rains, you'll see why it's called "giant".
