Field Notes

Description:

A medium-sized yellow fungus with about 5 lobes. It was smooth in texture with a short stalk connecting it to the ground.

Habitat:

On a deciduous forest floor surrounded by lowland trees such as Swamp White Oak, Bald Cypress, and Nuttall Oak.

Notes:

There is a large creek about 15 feet away.

I originally thought this to be a jack-o-lantern mushroom, because they do look very similar, but the jack-o-lantern mushroom is poisonous. After comparing a little, the gills indicate to me that this is a chanterelle mushroom, which is edible and often coveted. I'm not an expert though.
I agree with Chanterelle since the underside doesn't have real gills, instead it has 'veins'
