Field Notes

Description:

A very colorful jay that is variable throughout its range. This one was drying off after taking a bath. An interesting bird to watch and listen to. They are known to mimic the call of various hawks to frighten away other birds from food sources that they want to eat.

Habitat:

Spotted near a bird feeding station at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas. They are common in woods and mesquite brush as well in south Texas.
