Field Notes

Description:

The male wood duck has distinctive markings, with a bizarre face pattern, sweptback crest, a rusty chest, white belly and red eyes. The female has a white eye patch and is dull colored. There is also a blue patch on wing, which is often hidden.

Habitat:

This family of wood ducks were found in a pond at Kinder Farm park in Anne Arundel County Maryland. There is a pond nestled in a wooded area and the pond is covered with a green slim. The ducks don't seem to mind the slime at all.
