Field Notes

Description:

Small off-white bird with gray head and black feathers in the wings and tail.

Habitat:

Southern California high desert.

Notes:

Spotted perched in a Joshua Tree along Loop Road in Joshua Tree National Park. Unfortunately, this individual is looking away from the camera, so I was unable to get a profile view of the head and beak.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

EnvUnlimited - thanks for the ID. I was initially unsure if I agreed with you, because my spotting seems to have a black stripe behind its head, a feature which does not appear in any Loggerhead Shrike image I could find online. However, I could be mistaken about what I think I see, so I decided to accept your suggestion. It's too bad I did not image the beak. That would have been a "clincher," one way or the other.
