Field Notes

Description:

This foliose lichen is pale blue/green with many lobes. These leafy-looking lichens have rootlike threads that achor them to tree trunks, rocks, and soil. They do most of their growing in spring and fall when rainfall adds moisture to the air.

Habitat:

It grows in sun or shade on bark of deciduous or coniferous trees. They need moisture to grow.

Notes:

Lichens are not plants but two organisms of a fungus and an alga living together as one. The fungus acts as the house for the alga, giving it shelter from the weather. The fungus makes up 90% of the whole lichen. This lichen was found in the wooded area on north Cotton Lake road.
