Description:
The male is mostly black with pale green shoulder stripes and pale lower legs. The face is pale blue and the eyes are bright blue. Abdominal segments 9 and 10 are pruinose (whitish). On both sexes the back of the head is black. Female Southern Spreadwings look very much like female Slender Spreadwings, which are a little longer and have yellow wingtips and feet.
Habitat:
On a twig in an urban greenbelt.
Notes:
Unlike other damselflies, Spreadwing Damsels hold their wings at least partially flat when at rest. They are fairly large damselflies and are marked with metallic bronze or green. Males have blue eyes and pincer-like terminal abdominal appendages, which may be used to identify them to species. Many of the females are difficult to identify to species.
