Field Notes

Description:

Juveniles are browner than adults on their upperparts and head. This will become darker as they age.

Habitat:

Spotted foraging in the backyard.Tall mature fir and cedar trees along with a variety of maple and fruit trees. I also have areas of dense vegetation to attract birds.

I agree Brian, they are tough to get a good shot of. I could never catch them out of shadowy Ponderosa pine. This is a great shot. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks ornithoptera80. First time I've gotten a pic of one of these in the sun light. They seem to use shadows of the trees to their advantage. Only coming out in light for short spurts when foraging.

Thanks, Neil! These are the hardest birds to get a pic of (at least for me). I think because it was a juvenile its not as easily scared off as the adults are.
