Field Notes

Description:

Native scarab beetles mating on Clematis virginiana. Delta flower scarabs can be
identified by the yellow/gold delta (triangle) on the pronotum. This marking is thought to be a form of Batesian mimicry (for defense) as many wasps have similar markings/colors.

Habitat:

Old Man's Beard/blackberry patch at the edge of drainage ditch and roadside. Full sun. Nearby mixed hardwood forest and field.
