Description:

This mint plant has leaves that smell really good and the flowers had a bumblebee on it.

Habitat:

The spearmint plant is in our school grade and gets full sun.

Notes:

This plant was chosen by a 4th grade group at John G (The Pink Butterflies). Here are their questions based on their observations:

1. Why does it smell good?
2. What are the leaves kind of pointy?

You noticed that the plant smells good, but I bet you didn't notice something else unique about the stem...what is different about this stem versus the stems of other plants in the garden? Leaves are pointy because pointy leaves allow for better absorption of moisture in the air and "float" better in the wind so they can withstand the cold better than round leaves. When a leaf is pointy there is more surface area than when a leaf is round. Try this - take a string and measure the edge of a round leaf a pointy leaf about the same size. Follow every nook and cranny - which string is longer?
