Field Notes

Description:

Pretty similar to the Gila woodpecker, but endemic to southwestern Mexico.

Habitat:

This one was nesting on a columnar cactus forest (no other way of describing it) in an arid region of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Notes:

I had no idea of this species' existence when I took these pics. I thought it was a Gila woodpecker. Only later did I realize it was actually an endemic species! D:

Excellent woodpecker spotting! It is my pleasure to invite you to my mission for the woodpeckers of North America: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/71226021
Cool, I didn´t check if there were others :> How do I add it to the mission?
Nice find! And it seems to be the first of this species on Project Noah; congratulations! Since I think you also have its nest hole in the second picture, please consider adding this spotting to the Animal Architecture mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8082378
