Field Notes

Description:

The genus Argiope includes rather large spiders that often have a strikingly coloured abdomen... As most orb weavers, they own a third claw which is used to weave their complex webs. As most spiders, there is also a significant amount of sexual dimorphism, females measuring 19 to 28mm and males measuring 5 to 9mm.

Habitat:

Spotted inside a cottage in a remote islet in Tawi-Tawi, Phillippines.

If you look at https://eol.org/pages/1194696... you will see this statement , referring to the Philippines: "This organism is known to be present in this location or region. Not exclusive; other regions may also be reported." Not quite as informative as I would like, but I think your main interest was the scientific name. I have compared your spider's ventral view with some of my A. luzona pictures and I am pretty sure that yours is also A. luzona. The EOL information is useful because it does not restrict the distribution to limited areas of the Philippines and even suggests its presence in other countries. I hope that sorts it out a little better for you. John B.
Hi again, Alan Cajes, I thought that I had recently seen a reference to A. luzona being present in one or two places other than the Philippines, but I cannot put my finger on it right now. I will check again later when I have a little more time. I am busy with something else at the moment, but will let you know what I find out. John B.
Hi Alan Cajes, Nice picture of an Argiope luzona (female). Don't be mislead by the "luzona" species name. It is just named after the province in which it was discovered. Argiope luzona (as far as I know) is present almost everywhere in philippines, and I think some other countries, but I will check to make sure and contact you via "comments' again. John B.
