Description:
Some swiss cheese plant at a public garden in Cocoa Beach, Florida. This plant has like twenty different common names, among them fruit salad plant, Mexican breadloaf, and balazo. It's binomial name means "delicious monster" which refers to its size and it's fruiting body. The fruit is almost a foot long and takes almost a year to reach maturity, and has been described as pleasantly tasting as a mix between pineapples and bananas. This plant is very popular in indoor and outdoor gardens.
Habitat:
Native to tropical forests of southern Mexico, south to Panama. It has been introduced to many tropical areas, and has become a mildly invasive species in Hawaii, Seychelles, Ascension Island and the Society Islands.
