Field Notes
Description:
Large (1 in. long) galls grown in the root of some leaves of a bush. It is characterized by te thickening of the leaf's stem, forming a hard, fibrous tissue. This seems very sturdy, but it is possible to see a hole surrounded by what looks like burnt tissue, possibly caused by a parasite. The last photo shows an open gall, with the grub exposed.
