Field Notes

Description:

Bio-luminescence of these insects is know far and wide. Small insects maxing out around 13 mm in size. Many species are reported in Iowa and these photos likely capture multiple species.

Habitat:

These photos were taken in deciduous forest in a ravine. Tall plants like jewel weed (Impatiens pallida) and stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) are very common. Many falled logs can be found here too. A moist area with mushrooms.

Notes:

This is about peak season for fireflies.
