Field Notes

Habitat:

This Man-faced Shield Bug was spotted on foliage by the roadside, during a bug hunt.

Notes:

Several years ago, I did some searching around to try and find a good, solid identification for this bug and the most competent and convincing information that I could find was in the Bulletin American Museum of Natural History. Vol XXI; Article XI. - Notes on Australian Pentatomidae, with Descriptions of a Few New Species By E. P. Van Duzee, Buffalo, N.Y. The entire text of this article is published in https://digitallibrary.amnh.org/bitstrea.... Just one paragraph from pages 204 & 205 was enough to end my confusion and I am now confident in calling this bug Catacanthus carrenoi. I quote, verbatim, the words of Van Duzee where he mentions his specimens from the Philippines ; "Catacanthus nigripes Sulz. – Two examples in the American Museum Lot are labelled “Queensland, 341.” This species and carrenoi are very closely allied. Stål distinguishes the latter by its having the apex of the membrane pale beyond the end of the abdomen. Carrenoi is represented in my collection by specimens from the Philippines and the island of Tomia."

Species ID Suggestions

Hi Arne, nice to hear from you and thanks for the link to Catacanthus punctus. I looked at that species when I was researching to ID my spotting, but I decided on C. carrenoi. So, when I saw your comment, I went back and looked again, but I still think Catacanthus carrenoi is correct for this one, but thanks very much. You know already that I always value your opinions.
