Description:
This almost black noctuid moth had a wing span of about 50 mm. With deep purplish and brown shades it stands out from other smaller noctuids.
Wings have distinct patterns -a spear shape on each wing broken by pale grey reniform shapes.
Habitat:
Spotted under bright lights suburban car yard.
Notes:
Bogong Moths are interesting because they migrate from plains west of the Great Divide to cooler spots, at the approach of summer. They congregate near Mt Bogong during migration and hence the name. " Bogong" has its origins in an aboriginal word which means "high plains" These moths are occasionally seen in plague proportions in cities. This year they have started appearing early and this early migration is perhaps indicative of warmer and early onset of summer (according to CSIRO).
