Field Notes

Description:

Its name celebrates Alexander the Great, who apparently saw it in Punjab and exported many back to his home...this parakeet (we call it chandana) is larger than the Rose-ringed parakeet. It also has a red patch on its wings. The beak is bigger too (to my eyes).
The male has a black chin strap.

Habitat:

I heard them before I saw them. Then I spotted them on a Casurina tree near my house. From there it went to the Palash tree in flower (Butea monosperma ). This tree feeds many birds and squirrels. Today the Parakeet couple had a good breakfast. We have been having unseasonal cyclonic rains and there was a lot of dirty water accumulated under and near the tree, so I could not get better shots especially of the couple together (last shot). Still very happy that they visited the trees just outside my boundary wall...I do not see many of these birds in Kolkata...these are more often spotted in Delhi.

Notes:

These birds are decreasing and the status is Near-threatened.

Comments (1)

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
