Field Notes
Description:
-- This photo is of a female Red-winged Blackbird. Male Red-winged Blackbirds are: 1) around 9-inches, 2) an even glossy black with red-and-yellow shoulder badges. Females are: 1) around 7-inches, 2) a crisply streaked and subdued dark brown overall, with a paler breast; they often have a whitish eyebrow.
Habitat:
Specific Habitat: I spotted this female Red-winged Blackbird in the brush along the banks of a pond.
General Habitat:
-- Red-winged Blackbirds are generally found near water; they prefer wetlands. They frequent both fresh and saltwater marshes, but can be found at any water source including wet roadsides; as well they can be found in open grassy areas such as meadows, prairies, and old fields. In winter, you can find them at crop fields, feedlots, and pastures.
-- They are found in North America and Central America.
-- Breeding Area: Alaska and Newfoundland south to the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, and Guatemala.
-- Winter: They usually winter in the southern United States and Mexico.
Notes:
-- This bird was spotted by myself and a birding companion in the brush beside Turner Pond at Harvest Square Nature Preserve in Harvest, Alabama. We believe that she probably had a nest nearby, as she flitted about in the brush whenever we walked past on that part of the trail.
-- --The red-winged blackbird is a passerine bird of the family Icteridae.
