Field Notes

Habitat:

dock in Okanagan Lake, Penticton, BC. dry interior valley....but they are found almost everywhere in North America and most of the rest of the world.

Notes:

Even though these are everywhere, I decided to do a spotting for them. Did you know that they have been domesticated for so long that it is not really clear where they were native? Egyptian hieroglyphics from 5,000 years ago show these doves. A very successful species!!
There was a Citizen science study done on the plumages of Rock Pigeons by Cornell University using students from inner city schools in the US. to collect the data. I like this kind of thing!

these birds bring a lot of memories with them being around our areas and at the parks where we were when children and even now we still see them.
Nice spotting, Kathleen and thanks for the information. You'e so right about what we consider "common" -we miss out on some wonderful things so close to us and real survivors !
