Field Notes

Description:

Sitting on Everlasting flower (Edmondia sesamoides). Most common and widespread skipper in South Africa. Males patrol territories on hill tops, ridges or any small rocky outcrops.

Habitat:

This one was photographed in Mont Rochelle nature reserve which is a mountainous Fynbos area just above the town Franschhoek (French Corner) known for its wine production.

Notes:

The flower is called "everlasting" since it will hold its shape and form for years without wilting. It has a "paper" feel when touched. The Afrikaans common name is "sewejaartjie" meaning seven years.
