Description:
A mated pair of red shouldered hawks have nested behind my home in the same tree for two years. One of them flew out of the tree after a rodent in my yard - in these shots he or she is scoping out the dinner menu.
Habitat:
The East coast, deciduous woodlands. I've noticed they nest on the edge of the forest, not in the middle.
Notes:
Red shouldered hawks are the most vocal of all buteos. Females are larger than males. They court in the spring and are most vocal then, however I have the blessing of seeing them year round. I witnessed them mating near the tree that they nest in. What is very interesting is they use their nesting tree only for their young - they will eat and "hang out" in a tree beside their nesting tree.
