Roseate spoonbill
Platalea ajaja
9.86673, -84.7639
Field Notes
Description:
Roseate spoonbills are resident from Nicoya gulf to Tarcoles, but they can also be found on certain locations on Caribe coast.
They grow to a height of 32 inches with a wingspan of 50 inches and show intense contrasting colors on their environment, especially during their breeding season (with some yellowish patches on neck and head).
There are no recent studios on local populations, but big numbers are still managed, probably up to 10.000 individuals. Their environment has been severely damaged on the last 3 decades, but the protection on outer mangroove zones and their nesting locations, and the recent prohibition of all sport hunting in Costa Rica, mean a promising future for the species.
