False wireworm larva
Pterohelaeus sp.
-37.8571, 145.321
Field Notes
Description:
Deep red/brown at head and tail ends, about 10 segments merged to pale yellow colour at the middle. About 50mm long. Very smooth rear end (no distinct projections)
Habitat:
Embedded in earth under a large pine log in a local nature reserve.
Notes:
Wireworm larvae are from the family Elateridae and are mostly grey and less than 20mm long. False wireworm larvae are in the family Tenebrionidae, are mostly much larger and have no distinctive projections at the rear and. The only ones I could find of about 50mm were all 'Pie-dish beetle' - Pterohelaeus sp. <br> http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/plants/field-crops-and-pastures/broadacre-fi…
