Field Notes

Description:

How this tangle of onions came to be growing in the ditch on the side of the road is a mystery to me. It looks like three or four onions are growing from a single original onion - this is based on the remnant of papery skin around the whole mass.

Habitat:

The name "wild onion" is applied to a number of Allium species but A. cepa is exclusively known from cultivation and its wild original form is not known.

Notes:

Spotted growing on a wooded drive near an old church and cemetery and a utility plant.
