Field Notes

Description:

From a distance, it looks like a short, white caterpillar. It is actually the larva of a ladybird beetle. It is covered in white tuffs of wax, that look like hair.

Habitat:

Urban backyard.

Notes:

It looks like the larva of the Dusky Lady (Ladybird) beetle. It could be a Mealy Bug Destroyer, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri or a related member of the genus Scymnus.

"Mealy Bug Destroyer, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, a species introduced from Australia in 1891 to control Mealy Bugs on citrus in California" (BugGuide.net)
