Field Notes

Description:

Asilidae; Laphriinae; Laphriini; Laphria sp. "These large flies measure 15–25 mm (0.59–0.98 in) in length. Most Laphria species are quite hairy and black in color. Some have bee-mimicking markings with black and yellow stripes" Wikipedia.

Habitat:

Spotted in our front garden sitting on an Egg Plant (Solanum melongena). Many insects feed on these plants. So this Bee-like Robber Fly might have been on the lookout for prey.
