Perhaps a "Shadow Darner"-(Aeshna umbrosa ) :)
I'm not very familiar with the dragonflies of western USA, but this individual is definitely some type of Darner (Family Aeshnidae). Hope this helps to narrow your search for the identity of the dragonfly! http://bugguide.net/node/view/274
