Field Notes

Description:

Has an amazing face on the abdomen. Roughly the size of a 50 cent piece. The web seemed to be coming out with 4-5 strands and was very heavy duty.

Habitat:

Semi-arid sagebrush community.

Notes:

Awesome spider that I found on a doorway. Probably try to find a nice egg sack spot before winter. Coloring was neat where it was a creamy almost white abdomen.

It looks like some type of Orb weaving spider especially with those little 'horns' on it's shoulders. Orb Web Weaver (Araneidae) Araneus. http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/4DMG/Pests/spiders.htm
Good questions. Sorry being a science teacher I should have known better. This one was between 3-4 cm in diameter.
