Field Notes

Description:

Similar to the mottled ducks which are common here, but smaller, slimmer, lighter overall in color and with a longer, solid gray beak unlike the mottleds. It appears to be an adult female blue winged teal.

Habitat:

An inland fresh water canal

Notes:

This duck definitely looks unlike the others that are in the area and is the only one of its kind that I have seen. Also this individual has no discernible speculum in a contrasting color like blue or purple as the others do though I did not see it on land or flying so it might be hidden.

Anyone got any idea if this is a mottled duck or something else? It's baffling me.
